Choosing Patio Materials for a Rochdale Garden
The slab you pick changes the look, the upkeep and the price more than any other decision on a patio job. These are the materials we lay most often around Rochdale, and how each one behaves once a couple of British winters have been through it.
Porcelain: Dense and almost non porous, so it shrugs off stains and barely fades. It stays cleaner than stone and never needs sealing. It does have to go down on a full mortar bed with a slurry primer on the back of every slab, which is why it costs more to fit than it does to buy.

Slip resistance matters as much as appearance on any patio that faces north or sits under trees, and most surfaces look completely different wet than dry. We will show you samples soaked as well as dry before you commit to anything.
How We Build a Patio That Stays Flat
Patios very rarely fail because of the slab. Rocking units, standing water and blown pointing almost always trace back to the base or the bedding underneath, which is the part nobody sees and the part worth asking about.
The sub base: We dig out to a firm formation and compact a sub base of MOT type 1, typically 100mm to 150mm depending on the ground conditions and whether the patio has to carry anything heavier than garden furniture.
A full bed, not spots: Slabs are bedded on a full wet mortar bed. Spot bedding on five dabs of mortar leaves voids underneath, and those voids are exactly where frost damage, cracked slabs and rocking start.
Falls and levels: The surface is laid to a fall of roughly one in eighty running away from the house so rain sheds rather than pools, with the finished level kept at least 150mm below the damp proof course.
Jointing: Joints are filled with a brush in jointing compound or a mortar joint depending on the slab and the gap width. Either keeps weeds and ants out far better than dry sand ever will.
Edges: Perimeter slabs are haunched in so the outer course cannot creep or lift. Edges are where a patio normally begins to come apart.
