Ground Preparation: The Part That Decides How a Lawn Turns Out
Laying turf is the quick bit. Whether a lawn knits in, stays level and still looks right in two years is almost entirely decided in the days before the rolls are delivered, and preparation is the step most often rushed.
Clearing: Old grass, weeds and roots come out rather than getting turned under. Perennial weeds buried beneath new turf will find their way back up through it within a season.
Cultivation: The ground is rotavated or forked through so new roots have something loose to grow into instead of hitting a compacted pan two inches down.
Topsoil: Thin or poor ground gets a layer of quality screened topsoil. This matters most on newer estates, where the growing medium is often builders subsoil with a skim of something better over the top.
Levelling and firming: The surface is raked, heeled and raked again. Firming is what prevents the soft hollows and ridges that appear the first time a mower crosses them.
Feeding: A pre turf fertiliser goes in immediately before laying so the new roots have something to take hold of straight away.
Turf is then laid in staggered rows with tight butted joints, brick fashion, and tamped or rolled so every piece is in proper contact with the soil beneath it. Cut edges are shaped last so the finished line follows your borders rather than the roll width.
Aftercare Through the First Season
New turf is a living crop and the first six weeks decide whether you end up with a lawn or a patchwork. None of the aftercare is difficult, but it does have to be done, and most of it falls to you once we leave.
Watering: Water thoroughly and often for the first two to three weeks, enough to reach the soil beneath the turf rather than just wetting the blades. In a warm spell that can mean every single day.
Keep off it: Stay off a new lawn while it roots. Lifting one corner is the simplest test there is. Once it resists and holds on, the roots have taken.
The first cut: Usually two to three weeks in, with sharp blades and the mower on its highest setting. Never take more than a third of the leaf in one pass.
Feeding: A spring or autumn feed through the first year helps the sward thicken up and crowd out the moss and weeds before they get established.
When to lay: Turf goes down almost all year round provided the ground is neither frozen nor waterlogged. Autumn and spring are easiest because the soil is warm and the weather does much of the watering for you.
